Rules & Regulations

  1. Everyone must “check in” with the front desk staff upon entering the facility.
  2. All climbers and belayers must be authorized by a Boulderdash staff person with a signed copy of the Boulderdash waiver on file.
  3. Always climb directly below belay bars (No swinging).
  4. All belayers must anchor to the ground.
  5. Never walk between a climber on the wall and their belayer.
  6. All packs and personal possessions must remain outside the landing surface areas at all times.
  7. Food and drink must remain outside the landing surface areas at all times.
  8. Youth (15 and under) must be directly supervised by an adult at all times unless they are registered in a class.
  9. Lockers (no locks) are available for your convenience. (Boulderdash is not responsible for lost or stolen items)
  10. Minimum age to boulder is 6.

Boulderdash’s foremost priority is to provide a safe environment for gym users and staff. We will not compromise on safety issues. It is our view that safety is best served by providing access to high-quality, patient instruction.

Our “Up Rope” class concentrates on core principles of safety. We also strongly emphasize personal responsibility and require that each participant sign a waiver acknowledging that personal responsibility and releasing Boulderdash from liability. We take belaying and lead climbing very seriously, and we continually institute policies to ensure safety in this area.

Personal Responsibility . Participants are informed that rock climbing – and lead climbing in particular – does involve risk and that all climbers and belayers must be willing to take personal responsibility for their own safety as well as that of their partner.

Outlined below is a summary of the criteria that we use to assess an individual’s ability to climb and belay safely. All participants must be able to do these things to earn and retain the privilege of climbing in our gyms in order to ensure the safety of everyone. Please do not be disappointed if we require you to test multiple times; we are merely attempting to create as safe an environment as we can. We thank you in advance for taking the time and energy to learn safe climbing and belaying technique.

Belay Test

Minimum Requirements for top-roped climbing Boulderdash will allow climbers to maintain belaying privileges only if the individual demonstrates the following safety items at all times. Must be at least 13 years of age or older to belay:

All participants must sign a waiver releasing Boulderdash from liability and acknowledging their own personal responsibility for safe climbing.

  • All participants must use a UIAA approved tube style belay devices such as an ATC and climbing harness. No Grigri’s or Figure 8’s. * Belayers must remain attentive and stand while belaying.
  • Harnesses must be snug with belt above hips and tied-in securely with buckle doubled back.
  • Figure 8 follow-through knot must be tied through waist belt and leg loops.
  • Minimum of 6-inch tail on figure 8 follow through knot, with additional safety knot optional.
  • Belay device must be set properly and belay carabiner must be locked.
  • Belaying without dropping/letting go of the brake hand.
  • Switch between belaying and lowering without compromising the brake hand.
  • When lowering, brake hand must not go above 3 o’clock position.

Our staff may ask a climber to take the test on multiple occasions in order to ensure that the participant is using proper technique. Minimum requirements for lead climbing All lead climbers and lead belayers must be lead checked by gym staff. The lead test must be on a 5.9 route (or harder) that is unfamiliar to the climber. The reason for this requirement is that only a 5.9 or harder has no rests. We want to ensure that a climber will make the correct safety choices even when fatigued.


  • Lead belayers must check into the front counter each day.
  • All regular belay rules (see belay test) must be followed (e.g. harness doubled back, belay hand always on rope, etc.).
  • Belayers must remain attentive to lead climbers at all times and stand while belaying. Belayers must keep minimal slack – rope must not touch ground.
  • Belayer must catch the leader fall without losing control and with minimal rope play.


  • Lead climbers must check in at the front counter each visit.
  • Leader must clip all quickdraws, in order.
  • Leader must clip carabiners without trouble.
  • Lead climbers must clip at a level between their head and waist.
  • Leader must not Z-clip or back clip quickdraws.
  • Leader must appear safe.  Leader must be willing to take a reasonable fall.

Safety Requirements for Bouldering

  • Bouldering is dangerous! Please use caution.
  • Use a ‘spotter’ for difficult moves.
  • Main wall bouldering only up to top of hand’s reach.
  • Roped climbing has priority over bouldering on roped climbing walls.
  • Do not boulder in areas of use in top-rope and lead climbing.

The bouldering area is for adults – children must be actively supervised with no horseplay.
